The Amateur Eye – A Tarrasch Innovation Explored

February 28, 2020

The Sicilian Defense has a lot of variations within the opening phase.  That is why it is so attractive as a counter weapon against 1. e4.  But supposing White choose a different idea, here taken from the Alapin System which opens say with 1. e4 c5  2. c3 and black uses a shocker retort of an active Queen hop to 2. …. Qa5.  Everyone knows that such early Queen moves are rare in opening play so is it suspect to assume this is the case here?

The Qa5 has no direct weakness and black might feel c3 allows such a turn. Since moves alternate, can there be purpose behind the Queen development at this stage of the opening phase and what is it?  The answer is that it prevents the central complex being pawn structure on c3/d4/e4. and has no real weakness to convey on the above principle covering movement of the Queen early in the contest.

3. Nf3 Nc6 4. Na3 e6  5. Nc4 Qc7 occurred in Alpin vs. Tarrasch. A later game from 1997 went 5. Be2 d5 6. e:d5 e:d5 7. d4 c4 8. Nc2 Bd6 9. Bg5 Nge7 10. Ne3 O-O =as well as other tries.

A move by itself or even relating general principles does not make a plan faulty so the student should be aware that new moves in whatever context cannot be evaluated usually but must be weighed carefully in terms of general rules of development-attack-defense-counterattack.

The Amateur Eye – Queens Go Wild in this French Def.

February 28, 2020

This opening is between kids in a USCF tournament demands a look see because of the very pretty finish featuring a Bishop-pair checkmate.

1/ e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Qb6 6. Bd3 c:d4 7. c:d4 N:d4?

Correct was 7. ,,,, Bd7 with the threat on the d4 square. Now, he loses a piece.  Perhaps a review of Nimsowitsch’s MY SYSTEM would have been found somewhere in Black’s training to avoid such mistakes.

8. Be3 N:f3+

Even great talented players sometimes follow-up a bad plan and abruptly return the favor!  White is simply winning in this position but overlooks the fact that Black can capture the Knight with check so the appearance of a pin is faulty.

9. Q:f3! Q:b2 10. O-O!!

Safeguarding the King and working to complete developing aggression against the squares that now show up as being weakened due to the Black King’s loose ends.

10. ….Q:a1

Black grabs the Rook when Bd7 could be tried to bring some safety to the king position in the center.  But a loose Rook is very appetizing.

11. Bb5+ Kd8???

Why avoid developing by 11. …. Bd7!!?

Chess books and my own square count theory illustrate time again the value of development and blunting inroads against a loose King position. Black needs to control space and squares in his own sector.  Now, 12. B:d7+ K:d7! 13. Q:f7+  Ne7 appears to turn the tables on this game result.

12. Q:f7!! Q:e5 13. Q:f8+Kc7 14. Rc1+Qc3 15. R:c3+Kb8 16. Q:c8 checkmate.

White envisioned and carried out a mating attack using the Bishop pair which utilized the lack of move ability within the 64 square chessboard as valued within the framework of square count! Mate can occur only when a monarch cannot escape from a checking attack which finds no saving play available. Almost all times, the king’s own forces assist that aim by blocking an chance to escape.

The Amateur Eye — NYS Overtime Ripoff

February 26, 2020

The D&C Newspaper keeps hammer tabs on NYS but what good does it do? other than to piss off readers and maybe the reporters.  All you got to know about the scandals going on to see state residents are not being served and yet we see some workers find a way to rev up their total overtime pay — nice going !! ripoff artists.  Must be nice to set your own overtime as gospel truth without verification hours actually performed on the job and for NYS residents.  Nice reporting but you know where you and I live in this heavily Democrat stronghold called New York State. This overtime smells to high heaven as corrupt but will it ever be otherwise?  Maybe employees should be charged rent for living most of their time in NYS office buildings.  But of course I am only joking.  Yes, it would be nice to expose this shabby business for readers of the D&C but then, who objects or even cares when you vote every two years without having a real voice when steaks come burned and meals unappetizing.  It is all very good though to give readers a look see at what takes place through the work year of NYS employees hours on the job.  God bless the D&C.

Voice of Freedom Versus Communist Terror

February 25, 2020

Nora Lam was born a Chinese orphan who became a Christian through the Presbyterian Christian Missionaries in China.  With the blood drenched takeover by Mao, ruler of the north faction being communist/socialist trained, making himself the supreme ruler of all mainland China,  Nora Lam and her family suffered persecution.  Nora was put in a communist labor camp.  After a miraculous escape to freedom, she founded Nora Lam Ministries 45 years ago in America to help provide Bibles for China and to be a voice for persecuted Christians in China and throughout the world. Her life story is the award winning Christian motion picture CHINA CRY.

Socialism and Communism zero differences

February 25, 2020

I was blessed as a kid in 7th grade to have my history teacher Nolan Powell not only as an American History teacher but also a mentor over many years post schooling as a friend. He passed away after a long and successful life and former WWII veteran.

Recently I received a National Survey on Socialism and Communism in the USA. I agree 100% with questions and possible responses and decided to write about it on my blog.

It made me think about my own schooling given me by a number of wonderful teachers and overlook those years from suffering illnesses and injuries losing out in sports mostly due from water pollution affecting our dug well at home.  In those days there was simply no choice if you wanted running water coming in the faucets. While it was a hardship, thankfully it did not curb my chess game and interest for that sport that I was able to join in at the YMCA, a location found for the Rochester Chess & Checker Club by Dr. Erich Marchand, the club President and other civic leaders.

Several years ago I went to the Ontario Public Library wanting to see if there were any books by the author Kenneth Roberts whom my history teacher had almost twisted my arm to study.  I say that because Roberts books of many he wrote on American History were such that I could not stop reading as huge as the chapters were.  Movies were made of his literature adventures depicting events around the Revolutionary War and Indian wars of that period.  What I found was just one book by this author and no student taking it out since my own schooling.  Really sad because it seems like teachers were more interested in communism and despising historical drama of real life from those times. I say this because of visiting Barnes & Noble to find high school and college kids absorbed with writings of Marx, etc. and wonders of socialism as superior to capitalism.

A number of dinners with Nolan Powell and his son verified the type of school system our country had regressed to in heroic and patriotic terms in the history classrooms of America as noted to be widespread across our Land we so cherish.  Is there any wonder why teens and even younger go home with socialistic values being an argumentive subject around some tables.

My own experience viewing the Soviet Bloc nations attests to the shortcomings of communism and socialism because both fall far short of the American way of life where the individual and family have reasonable hopes for ever improving the joy of living FREE.

And of course we must address the communism seen coming from the masses  usurped of free will by its one power element using FORCE.  You see that in every territory taken over by force of the communist dictatorships in China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, etc. etc. wherever the socialist dominate free will and thought.  Control is the key to their hideous existence and why the American public must ever be on alert to it as one does all such scoundrels who rise to power by sweet talk con artists but as the fairytale often points to a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The Amateur Eye – Ding Liren takes London by Storm

February 24, 2020

Chinese super star Ding Liren  takes top in Grand Chess Tour held in London, England by walking away with the $150,000 1st. Prize!

White: Ding Liren  vs. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave

The English Opening/Botvinnik System Reversed  1. c4 c5 2. g3 g6 3. Bg2 Bg7 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. Nf3 e5 6. O-O Nge7 7. d3 d6 8. a3 a5 9. Rb1 O-O.

This series has been played numerous times and both appear happy in their choice for the battle entering the middle game.

10. b3 Rb8 11. Bb2 h6 12. Nd2 Be6 13. Nd5

Controlling the d5 square and going per the square count goal of digging into the enemy territory.

13. …. b5 14. e3 Qd7! 15. Re1!

Tit for tat as the threat of …. Bh3 can preserve the bishop with Bh1 and the Rook can post on the center file backing the e-pawn prospects later on.

15. …. Bg4 16. Qc2

His pawn on a5 is weak so White can attack via Bc3 leaving his Q-side in bad shape.

16. …. Rfc8 17. Ne4  N:d5 18. c:d5 Ne7 19. Nd2!

This strong retreat of the knight leave his Rook misplaced as now the a-pawn can advance and give the knight a c4 square to sit on.

19. …. Bh3 20. Bh1 Nf5 21. a4 h5 22. a:b5 R:b5 23. Ra1 h4  24. Bc3 Ra8 25. Ra4 Qd8 26. Bf3 Rab8 27. Rea1 Bh6 28. Re1 Qg5

This rare occurrence where square count shows less but is more because of the solid piece and pawn structure of White.

29. Ne4 Qd8 30. Ra3 Ne7 31. Nd2 Nf5 32. Qd1

Things are turning with threats now of Bg4 and g4.

32. ,,,, Bg7 33. g4!!

This shot completely changes the nature of the position.  There is no longer a threat of …. N:e3 and the Rook on a3 can join the attack as well. That was the purpose of keeping the two bishops on the board!

33. …. Nh6 34. Kh1 f5 35. g:f5 g:f5 36. Rg1 Qd7 37. Qe2 Kh8 38. Ra4! R:b3

White is now in total control of the game with this featured attack.

39. R:h4 R:c3 40. R:h3 a4

The powerful looking 40. …. Rb2 but 41. Qe1 R:d3 42. Nc4 Rb4 43. Qf1! and White is winning the battle.

41. e4 Rc2 42. Rh5 f4 43. Qd1 Rbb2 44. Nc4 a3 45. Bg4 Qd8 46. N:b2 R:b2 47. Be6 a2 48. R:g7 K:g7 49. Qg1+ Kf8 50. Rf5+ Black resigns.

American Legion 3/20/20 On UFO sightings by Navy

February 24, 2020

Pearl Harbor and 9/11 went basically unheeded which led to attacks on our citizens and military defenses.  The DoD doesn’t appear to take warnings by navy pilots seriously.

Military naval pilots flying our top modern fighter jets were not able to respond as a host of UFO sightings persistently followed our own maneuvers over a period of months.  Reports seem to have been ignored by the DoD and other intelligence surveillance despite the UFOs super and superior aircraft.  One navy pilot noted that he wished to fly one of those craft someday.  While no engagement took place, the quality and number of sightings trailing our own naval planes seems like Congress is dropping the ball once again.  They waste their energies on trying to fight ghosts of spy rings trying to undermine our elections, once already debunked except for that initiated for the benefit of the Democrat Party screwups during the Hillary Clinton scandal of fake news.

As reported in the American Legion magazine article by Christopher Mellon the quality of education is not only remiss in our education schooling but has carried over into political irony.  A sad state of affairs!

The Amateur Eye — square count/open lines = Crush!

February 21, 2020

Moscow Blitz saw World Champion fired up spirit as he uncorked a sizzling total board domination from opening as cherished by Vladislav Artemiev’s Grunfeld Defense setup: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. c:d5 N:d5 5. e4 N:c3 6. b:c3 Bg7 7. Bc4 c5 8. Ne2 Nc6 9. Be3 O-O 10. h4

I myself played this move many years ago after writing my pamphlet essay for high school English class.  The idea then as is now to increase square count and to expand kingside pawn play toward an attack on the defending King position. While I won it, there was quite a variance of thought given the result being positive for me as well.

10. …. Qa5 11. O-O Bd7 12. Rb1!

More squares in my eye.

Qc7 13. h5! c:d4 14. c:d4 Rad8 15. h6! Bh8 16. Qc1 Rc8 17. Qd2 Na5 18. Bd3 b6 19. Rbc1 Qb7 20. Bg5

Striking ever closer to the enemy forces.

20. …. Rfe8 21. R:c8 Q:c8 22. Rc1 Qb7 23. d5

White is eying deeper penetration with pawns supported by some heavy weaponry.

23. …. Be5 24. Bf4!

Tickling the Queen to move.

24. …. Qb8 25. B:e5 Q:e5 26. f4 Qh5

Attacking and winning the pawn on h6 that has performed a true warrior’s sacrifice for the betterment of all attacking units.

27. Rc7!! This is the beginning of a general rout of the enemy defense that leaves the foe in chaos,

27. …. Bg4 28. Bb5 Rf8 29. R:e7

The might of the Rook on the seventh ala Nimsowitsh!  Glory be!

29. …. Q:h6 30. d6 Qh4 31. Nd4 Rd8 32. e5

The foot soldiers having their marching orders start the attack.

32. …. Qg3 33. Qf2 Qc3 34. f5 g:f5 35. N:f5 B:f5 36, Q:f5 Qd4+

A last horrah.

37. Qf2 Qd5 38. d7 Qd1+ 39. Bf1 Black resigns.

Magnus Carlsen won the Moscow Blitz Tournament with a score 16.5 on tie-break points. Hikaru Nakomura from the USA tied 16.5 and took 2nd on tie-break points. A surprise visit by former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik took 3rd with 15 points returning to fight again after retiring from active tournament play last year.
