Kindred’s Special: The Smothered Mate–Beginners’ Lessons in How Not to Play Chess

The announcement of “Smothered Mate!  I win!! almost never will be seen in games between experienced chessplayers.  The axe falls in surprise mostly to the chagrin of the novice or beginner who falls prey to clever attacks within the area of the King that suddenly finds the majesty has no clothes and no place to hide.  A number of interesting shorts exist that illustrate such mates and adds spice to Life.

Game A.  1. e4  e5  2. f4  d5  3. exd5  e4  4. Qe2  f5  5. d3  Nf6  6. Nd2  Bb4  7. dxe4  Nxe4  8, Qb5+ Kf7  9. Qxb4  Qh4+  10. g3  Nxg3 11.Ngf3 Re8+ 12. Kd1  Nxh1 13. Be2  Nf2+ 14. Ke1  Nd3 double + 15. Kd1 Qe1+  16. Nxe1  Nf2 checkmate.

Game B.  1. e4  c5  2.Nf3  Nc6  3. d4  cxd4  4. Nxd4  e5  5. Nf5 Ne7  6. Nd6 checkmate.

Game C.  1. d4 f5  2. Bg5  h6  3. Bf4  g5  4. Bg3   f4  5. e3  h5  6. Bd3   Rh6  7. Qxh5 +  Rxh5  8. Bg6 checkmate.

Game D.  1. e4  c6  2. d4  d5  3. Nc3  dxe4  4. Nxe4  Nd7 5. Qe2  Ngf6  6. Nd6 checkmate. (I won twice giving a simultaneous exhibition.)

Game E. 1. e4  e5  2. Nf3  Nc6  3. Bc4  Nd5  4. Nxe5  Qg5  5. Nxf7  Qxg2  6. Rf1  Qxe4+  7. Be2  Nf3 checkmate.

Each game above points to one or more of my earlier lessons on a chess theme like the f7-square weakness; the King caught in the center;  overtaxed piece; block of a defender of a crucial square.

You may laugh at this lesson but I tell you that it is important because it shows the relationship among the pieces and squares. Most important is it illustrates my square count theory in action.  My lessons are to build your understanding of how chess positions arise and how attacks and defense concerns overlap.

If you have questions about these game examples, you can comment on the above title.
