Kindred’s Special: A Miracle Witnessed At The Masters

Sometimes the news media gets it all wrong. Take the Masters Golf Tournament and the hype of following every move that Tiger Woods made. It was not to be Tiger Woods day in the sun. The sun shined on an old timer by modern day golf standards. Tiger missed a putt that would have given him a place among the contenders. Then, he hooked a drive and the cry was that taking time off from golf was hurting his game. All during the TV broadcast of the event, it was Tiger Woods this and Tiger Woods that. Shucks.

Around that time, a miracle started to attract attention in the smiles by one golfer named Phil Mickelson. He had substituted his usual caddy and let his wife’s doctor do the honors.  No matter the lie of a good drive or bad, he smiled and played the hole. He kept smiling with every tee off, every iron to the green, every putt whether it be a 5 foot missed putt or a 50 foot birdie putt.  As he walked the course, he shook hands with folks and waved and always kept smiling. His wife who suffered a bout with cancer told him to go play. He had skipped tournaments and practice to care for her as well as his mother who also had cancer.  He, too, was out of practice. But he was there and he wanted to perform at his very best. And perform he did!  He carried the day and when it was over, his name was at the very top with the lowest total among the host of great golfers.  As Phil Mickelson walked up to the 18th tee, he did not know his wife had arrived to be there. He smiled to the crowd, to the TV audience, and he looked skyward and smiled to God. He holed the putt. He hugged his caddy and others, waved to the crowd and walked to the scorer’s shack. Then he had the biggest smile; he saw his wife waiting for him and it seemed like they were the only two present.

Sometimes the news media and sport buffs get it wrong and pay too much homage to the hype from press releases and critics.  When that happens, every-so-often a miracle takes place. It did at the Masters.
